Wilbur David Maxwell, lifelong resident of Ponca City, passed away Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 53. Wilbur was born the son of James Fred Maxwell and Frances Marie Belcher on Dec. 5, 1955 in Ponca City. He grew up in Ponca City and graduated from Ponca City High School. He was later employed with Plumbers and Pipefitters Union local 747, now 430 for 25 years. He later worked for Johnson Control at Ponca City Medical Center for five years. Wilbur married Sondra Hughes on June 3, 1983 in Ponca City and to this union, one child, John was born. Wilbur enjoyed the outdoors. He loved being with his friends, going to the river, riding on the airboat, camping, hunting and fishing. He also liked gardening and raising chickens. When he wasnt outdoors, he could be found canning kosher zucchini pickles and making batches of peanut brittle. He will be deeply missed by those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Sondra of Ponca City; son, John Maxwell of Ponca City; mother, Frances Waddell of Ponca City; sisters, Becky Gammill and husband, Don of Edmond and Kathy Womack and husband, Mitchell of Luther; grandmother, Helen Belcher of Ponca City; father and mother-in-law, Bucky and Mary Hughes of Ponca; brother-in-law, Bucky Hughes; nieces and nephews, Stacy, Bo and Bryan; numerous great nieces and nephews; other extended family, Rick Waddell of Ponca City; Bob Waddell of Willis, Texas and Nancy Ussry of Stillwater. He was preceded in death by his father, James; step-father, Lester Waddell; grandfather, John Wilbur Belcher and grandma and grandpa Maxwell. Casket bearers for the service will be Tim Glaser, Tracy Glaser, Brad Irons, Mike McEnany, Bill Stieber and Barry Roller. Honorary casket bearers will be Danny Brown, Terry Burns, Bill McEnany, Lawrence Glaser and Joe Morrison. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at Longwood Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Ridgway and Don Stanton officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, 1904 N. Union, Ste. 103, Ponca City, Oklahoma 74601.
