Uyles C. Mathews, lifelong resident of Ponca City, passed Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Via Christi Village. He was 89 years of age.
Uyles was born March 31, 1923 in Ponca City, the son of Bennie Mathews and Elva Waters Mathews. He received his education in the Ponca City Public Schools. Uyles married Maxine Nelson on June 13, 1942 in Ponca City. He entered the United States Army Infantry on January 13, 1943 and was a member of the 2nd Infantry Division. He took part in the Normandy Invasion at Omaha Beach on DDay plus 1. Uyles was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 5 months. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, 4 Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and the ETO Ribbon. He served in 4 different campaigns, Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and Northern France. He was honorably discharged from the Army on August 31, 1945.
Uyles was a longtime floor covering and tile installation contractor in Ponca City, retiring in 1993. He was a lifetime member of ExPOWs, DAV and American Legion. He was also a longtime member of Woodlands Christian Church. His enjoyments included traveling and sightseeing, reading, working puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren and other family. Uyles and Maxine were married for 55 years until Maxines death in January of 1998.
Uyles married Marie Vaughn on February 19, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Marie, of Austin, Texas his four children, Linda M. Linskens and husband, Philip, of San Marcos, California, Bennie Mathews and wife, Linda, of Little Elm, Texas, Dennis Mathews and wife, Debra, of Ponca City, and Teresa Mathews Stang, of Eugene, Oregon three stepchildren, Terri Cockroft, Vickie Grey and Michael Vaughn one sister, Wanda Cleveland, Corona, California, and one brother, Lester Mathews of Banning, California 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren 5 great great grandchildren and numerous stepgrandchildren numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Uyles was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine his father, Bennie Mathews, his mother, Elva Mathews Carroll his stepdad, Fred Carroll 2 infant brothers one sister, Elgeva Simonian and one granddaughter, Jerri Lynn Cheever.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2013 at Grace Memorial Chapel with Rev. Richard Newman of Woodlands Christian Church presiding. Interment will follow with military honors at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery. The casket will be closed at the service.
Casket bearers will be Doug Young, Brent Mathews, Duane Mathews, Allen Kuykendall, Shane Pruett, and Dennis Lincoln. Honorary casket bearer is Bobby Grey.
