Sarah J. Walker, affectionately known as Jean by some, was born Sarah Jane Harrison on December 6th, 1925 at 39 Iola St, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She was the second eldest child of Scipio Harrison and Emma Emily L. Clark Harrison. Sarah J. Walker gracefully endured her illness with tremendous bravery and courage. On Monday, October 29th, 2012, at 12:34 p.m. she peacefully completed her mortal journey and transitioned in her sleep into the presence of Christ. She was with family and friends at her passing and without pain.
Sarah received her formal education from Manual Training High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma graduating in 1943. She then moved to Wichita, Kansas for employment and later on to the Los Angeles, California. She was married to Velmus Jones who passed and remarried years later to Joseph Walker.
Sarah loved to travel. She and Joe traveled extensively across the United States, the Caribbean and Canada. The couple would often be found flying to various destinations using their passports or driving which was their favorite form of travel across the United States.
Sarah J. Walker was a hard worker, devoted to family and friends. Having been employed in aerospace with Lockheed and Douglas Aircraft, she is most notable for her 32 years with Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo, California. Her position as a line inspector supervisor and later the Union Steward made her a mentor, role model, friend and confidant to associates and employees of Hughes Aircraft. She acted as the liaison between the executive management team and employees and was well suited for the job as we all know of her tenacious and aggressive attitude when it comes to having it Her Way. June 27th, 1986 a grand retirement celebration was given for Sarah by Hughes Aircraft executives and coworkers and 2 years later she moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma.
Being reared in a Christian home, Sarah accepted Christ at an early age. Her spiritual upbringing remained with her and guided her adulthood. At passing, she was an active member of St. John Baptist Church along with other family members. She also loved the Lord and lived a life that exemplified Gods love by serving as a member and Past Worthy Matron of Orpha 151 Order of the Eastern Star.
Sarah loved her family unconditionally. She often vacationed in Muskogee and Ponca City in an effort to stay closely rooted to family. She enjoyed cooking, dancing, parties, church and sporting events. Anyone that knew Sarah Walker knew that she was a die hard fan of OU, Oklahoma University. You could not win an argument against her when it came to her team, OU. Oh, and lets not forget the RED Boots Additionally, she insisted on wearing her RED Boots everyday while in the Ponca City Nursing Center, even though her feet were so swollen and the boot only covered half of her foot.
She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters Evelyn Hughley, Josephine Roland Norwood and a brother, Scipio Andrew Harris Jr.
Sarah is survived by her sisters, Jimmie Ruth Bumpas, Lillian Givens and Mary Frances Wilson and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Going Home Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2012 at St. John Baptist Church with Rev. Elza Haynes officiating.
Casket Bearers will be Justin Roland, Clarence F. Givens, Jasper Lockett, Jerry Harris, Trent Veasy, Cleo Veasy and Jerome Orange.
