Roy James Long Jr., resident of Shidler, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2008 at St. Anthonys Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was 84. Roy was born April 22, 1924 in Pershing, Oklahoma, the son of Roy James Long Sr. and Johnnie Mabel Sigler Long. He was a graduate of Nowata High School. Immediately after high school, in May of 1943, Roy enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a aircraft gunner in World War II. Roy was awarded the Naval Aviation Medal and was honorably discharged from the Navy in June of 1946. He was married to Barbara Daniel on April 9, 1949 in Del Rio, Texas. Roy was employed with Phillips Petroleum Company from December 2, 1946 to January 1, 1985, retiring as a maintenance foreman. Roys enjoyments included playing golf, fishing and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; one son, Mark Alan Long, Fairbanks, Alaska; one granddaughter; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Billy Gene Long Sr., Joe Max Long and Ronald Dean Long; and one sister, Betty Marie Miller. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Scott presiding. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
