Mary Lou Cargill, long time resident of Shidler, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at her home surrounded by her family. She was 57. Mary was born the daughter of William Harold Chandler and Mary Jo Chandler Carter on June 5, 1951 in Lexington, Oklahoma. She grew up in Lexington and later attended Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma graduating with a master's degree in education. She married Stephen Wesley Cargill who she met at the university cafeteria. They were married on May 20, 1972 in Cushing, Oklahoma, and to this union three children were born. In 1975, the couple moved to Shidler, Oklahoma where Mary taught special education students for 35 years. She recently retired from Shidler Public Schools in May of 2008, but even after her retirement, she could be found at the elementary and high school library reading to the students. She also loved storytelling and her storytelling was a favorite of all. Mary Lou was a vibrant and adventurous woman who loved to travel. She traveled to numerous places including Costa Rica, the Virgin Islands, Barbados and New York. Mary was an avid athlete and whether she was running marathons, climbing Pike's Peak or riding her bike she could always be found in motion. She was also faithful about going to Jazzercise classes in Ponca City. She has taught exercise classes in Shidler as well. Mary had many other enjoyments which included camping in a tent with her family, working outside, making wonderful Amish cookies and reading. She was also famous for her specialty pancakes. Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her parents; loving husband, Stephen; children, Tiffany Cargill of Barnsdall, Oklahoma, Casey Cargill ,wife, Jennifer of Ponca City, and grandchildren, Dax Perrier and Dalton Vogele. Derek Cargill and wife, Alicia of Edmond; three sisters, Theresa Monks, Bonnie Keeton and Susie Cargill; one brother, Billy Chandler; numerous nieces and nephews. Casket bearers for the service will be Britton Wehunt, Justin Cargill, Billy Chandler, Alan Monks, Matt Holland and Vernon Young. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 28, 2008 at the Webb City Church of God with Brother Charles Richey officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery in Kaw City under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. A display of Mary's achievements will be available for friends and family to see at the Webb City Church of God on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Mary's honor to Shidler Public Schools Library, Highway 11 West, Shidler, Oklahoma 74652.
