Mark Verrion Calls Him Sr., former Ponca City area resident, took his final journey on Sunday, August 11, 2013 in Tulsa at the age of 46. Mark was a proud member of the Ponca Tribe and a direct descendent of Yellowberry, Primeaux and Fireshaker families. His Ponca name was Glaydah Ska, which means white hawk.
He was born August 14, 1966 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, the son of George Calls Him Jr. and Imogene Primeaux Calls Him. He attended the Sequoyah Schools near Tahlequah and Pioneer VoTech in Ponca City where he earned certification as an auto mechanic. Then he became a licensed auto mechanic in Tulsa.
Mark was brought up in the Methodist Church and later became a member of the Native American Church. He was a nationally known champion Fancy War Dancer, Hoop Dancer, Shield Dancer and Eagle Dancer. He was also a champion at the Ponca PowWow feather pulling contest. He also enjoyed drawing.
He is survived by his six children, Mark Calls Him Jr. of Tulsa, Karrian Markette Cheater of Sallisaw, Sacheen Marnette Calls Him, Joshua Gage Calls Him, Zipporah Michelle Calls Him and Mariah Calls Hims, all of Tulsa five grandchildren, Jeremy Cheater Jr., Rosa Annette Castillo, Ivy Sacheen Macias, Joshua Gage Calls Him Jr. and Leah Michelle Alvarez on the way four brothers, George Calls Him III of Oregon, Melvin Calls Him Sr. of Washington State, Elden Calls Him Sr. of Washington State and Elwood Calls Hims Sr. of Tonkawa five sisters, Augustine Paschal of Washington State, Jolene Calls Him of Washington State, Christine Calls Him Eagle of Ponca City, Georgina Calls Him Slavin of Ponca City, and Delores Calls Him of Iowa numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents one brother, Edward Calls Him Sr. and one sister, Kay Christie Calls Him.
Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Ponca Indian Methodist Church. A traditional noon meal will be served on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Ponca Indian Methodist Church fellowship hall with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. at the Ponca Indian Methodist Church. Bro. Jimmy White will be the presiding minister, assisted by Bro. Doug Eagle. Burial will follow in the Ponca Tribal Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
Casket bearers are Mark Calls Him Jr., T.J. Calls Him, David Eagle, Elwood Calls Him Sr., Jose Macias and Samuel LeClair. Honorary casket bearers are George Calls Him III, Melvin Calls Him Sr., Elden Calls Him Sr., Darrell Rhodd, Bruce Warrior, Stephen Littlecook and Fritz LeClair.
