Lamont Brown II

March 4, 1960 — October 5, 2023

Ponca City

Lamont “NDN” Brown II, son of Mava and Eugene Brown and husband of the late Mary Martha Warrior Brown passed away in his home on October 5, 2023.  Lamont’s paternal grandparents were the well known Ponca traditional singer Lamont Brown and Sadie NoEar.  His maternal grandparents were Ed Roy and Beulah Roy.

Lamont was nicknamed “NDN” when he was a little boy because he reveled in his Ponca traditional ways of knowing, Ponca language and culture.  He was proud of his Ponca heritage and was semi-fluent in the Ponca language. Lamont’s Ponca traditional name was “Lamunte“.   He was a member of the Ponca Heluska Society, Gives Water Service Club and the House of Warriors.  NDN was a member of the Baptist Church and White Eagle Community. He attended Ponca City Schools and Haskell Institute, majoring in Industrial Trades.  The term “NDN” is now prominent across Indian Country, but “NDN” Brown was given that name long before “ndn” was used in the pop Native Culture.

Lamont had two sons and 4 daughters: Cheryl Brown, Katie Brown, Rosemary Brown, and Andellaka Leclair and two sons: Lamont Brown III and Odi Brown. His eldest Lamont “Sonny Boy” Brown and eldest daughter Cheryl Dee Brown Coriz predeceased him.  He leaves behind 3 daughters, 1 son, and grandchildren:  Della Coriz, Brown, Raylee Brown, Daden Brown, Dayla Brown, Stephen Coriz, Cheryl Coriz, Jaymee Waters, Leila Rose Waters, Maylacia Grant, Miomba Grant, Elena Grant, M Michael Grant, Rena Williams, Ranah Brown, and Mary Martha Brown, Jordan Rhodd, and Jayla Rhodd.  Great Grandchildren include Ashton Hall, Isiah Coriz , and Ezekieal Coriz.

Lamont came from a large family with several siblings including  Cody Brown, Tessie Brown, Teresa Brown. Predeceasing siblings include Alice Brown, Denny Brown, Phillip Brown, Curtis Brown, and Kenny Brown, Jr.

Lamont “NDN” Brown will be greatly missed by his family and the Ponca Tribal community. He was a great father and papa and sure loved to sing and play with his grandkids. He will be missed very much.
