Joe Thomas Shields, 74, Ponca City resident, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at the Ponca City Medical Center.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, who was his best friend, and his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Joe was born July 25, 1936 in Bradley, Arkansas the son of James Edward Shields and Fannie Leola Simpkins Shields. Joe was very dedicated to his work and had a lifelong career in construction. He worked for SOG Construction in Muskogee before coming to Ponca City in 1972. He also worked for Brown Root Construction, Bull Construction, Throop Construction and retired from Evans and Associates.
Joe enjoyed all sports especially wrestling and football. He enjoyed watching his sons play sports also. He loved going to church services and was a deacon at Reach Out for Jesus COGIC.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jessie of the home children, Anthony Christian and wife, Tina, Larry Blunt and wife, Tiffany, Antoinette Taylor and husband Roderick, Patrick Shields, Artra Shields and Dennis Shields and wife, Kia all of Ponca City, Oklahoma. From a previous marriage he had a son Joe Lee Shields and wife, Donna of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and a daughter Johnnie Mae Chappel and husband Claude, of Indianapolis, Indiana 17 grandchildren two greatgrandchildren his motherinlaw Juanita Swygert of Ponca City, Oklahoma two brothers, George Shields and wife, Codella of Dumas, Arkansas and Floyd Shields and wife, Theresa of Washington, D.C. two sisters, Ora Lee Berry and husband, Paul and Frances Blair both of St. Louis, Missouri.
He is preceded in death by his parents fatherinlaw, Edward Swygert brothers and sisters, Julia Mae Russins, J.W. Shields, Lacataski Shields, Leola Spencer, Jeraldine Shields, Veria Bell, Charity Wade, Joe Louis Shields, Victor Shields, Vinesta Campbell and his twin Louis Thomas Shields.
Casket bearers for the service will be Randy Jackson, Ronnie Jackson, Rodrick Jackson, Barry Rice, Willie Swygert Jr., Wesley Swygert and Theodore Spragsins.
Honorary casket bearers will be sons and grandsons.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 29, 2010 at Victory Worship Center with Elder Sylvester Alexander and Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
