Hugh D. Griff Griffin

Hugh D. Griff Griffin, longtime resident of Ponca City, passed Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Sterling House in Ponca City. He was 91 years of age.

Griff was born January 19, 1920 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, the son of Mark Eugene Griffin and Montana Saunders Griffin. While growing up he helped his parents operate a hamburger stand in Sand Springs, and also helped his family with farming operations. He was a 1937 graduate of Sand Springs High School. In 1940 he attended aviation school in Dallas, Texas. In 1941 he worked for both Douglas Aircraft and North American Aircraft Companies. He joined the United States Navy in 1943 and served his country until his honorable discharge in 1946.

He was married to Loretta Padea in 1952, divorcing in 1958 he then married Isora Jennings in 1965 and she preceded him in death in 1984 he then married Mary Ann Womack in 1988, divorcing in 1990 but remaining best friends until her passing in 2006.

He began employment with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in 1946. He began as a lineman, later moving to installations and finally was promoted to PBX installer. He had been the PBX installer at Conoco for several years. He retired from Southwestern Bell on February 9, 1977 after 30 years of employment.

Griff was accomplished at needlepoint and had made numerous beautiful needlework pictures throughout his years. He also enjoyed motor homing and spent many winters in South Texas. He was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers.

He is survived by one brother, Eugene Griffin of Prescott, Arizona his stepdaughter and caregiver, Theresa Williams of Ponca City several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 wives.

Per his request there will no funeral, but a visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Grace Memorial Chapel.
