Herman Herbert Headrick, Jr., longtime resident of Ponca City died Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at Ponca City Medical Center. He was 76.
Herman was born on May 16, 1934, in Pryor, Oklahoma to Herman Herbert Headrick, Sr. and Nellie Mae Butler Headrick. He spent much of his childhood moving about the United States with his mother preceding and during World War II as they followed his father during his naval career. He loved to recount the stories of his youth and years spent in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Chula Vista, California among other locations. Herman and his parents settled in Ponca City in 1946. He attended East Junior High, Ponca City High School, and graduated from the Oklahoma Military Academy in 1952.
On February 14, 1969, Herman married Wanda Franklin at the Sageeyah Baptist Church in Claremore, Oklahoma.
Herman was employed for over 35 years by Conoco. He began working in the tour aide department while in high school spent time traveling with the seismograph crew worked in the research and development lab and various roles throughout the refinery. Herman retired in 1993 as the area mechanical supervisor in the south plant of the Ponca City Refinery.
Herman began swimming competitively at an early age and continued until he was 55. He was a member of Conocos youth teams, The University of Oklahoma Aquatic Team, the United States Masters Swimming organization, and various other teams over the years. He was also a member of the Cherokee Wheelmen Bicycle Club and enjoyed numerous Oklahoma FreeWheel Cross State Bicycle Tours with the group. There are few things that Herman enjoyed more than the camaraderie of friends and fellow athletes.
Herman is survived by his wife, Wanda of Ponca City his son Lee Headrick and wife Cindy of Ponca City his daughter Michele Bowe and fianc Ernest Weishiemer of Richmond, Texas and their son Kevin Headrick and wife Sheri of Frisco, Texas. Herman was also the proud grandfather of David Headrick, Lorrie Headrick, Kimberlee Adams, Connor Headrick, Avery Headrick, Dawn Negley, Jeremy Johnson, Luke Garrison and ten greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his brotherinlaw David Franklin and sisterinlaw Nina Wilkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents his son Michael Headrick and his infant grandson Dennis Jerome Wood.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 29, 2010 at Sunset Baptist Church in Ponca City with Rev. Matt Brown and Rev. John Young officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
Casket bearers will be Ron Adkins, Pat Bunney, Dick Combest, Scott Garrett, Kenneth Love, and Bill White.
