June 17, 1928 — March 26, 2015

Frost L. "Frosty" Nix, longtime resident of Ponca City, passed Thursday, March 26, 2015 at the Ponca City Medical Center. He was 86 years of age.

Frosty was born June 17, 1928 in Wellington, Kansas, the son of George McKinley Nix Sr. and Helen Mae (Tinklepaugh) Nix. He attended the Ponca City Schools and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1946. He continued his education at Southwestern Oklahoma College in Weatherford.

Frosty entered the United States Navy on August 20, 1950 and was assigned to the USS General W.A. Mann (TAP-112) transport ship. While serving aboard this transport he traveled around the world transporting soldiers and supplies to numerous worldwide ports. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on June 15th, 1954 as a Machinist Mate Third Class. Frosty married Doris Fay Hendley on August 27, 1960 in Ponca City.

He served 24 years on the Ponca City Fire Department, retiring as Assistant Fire Chief in 1987.

In 1955 he helped with others to establish the Ponca Bowmen Club and was instrumental in establishing the local archery range. He was a member of Woodlands Christian Church, VFW, American Legion, Ponca Bowmen Club, Woodcarving Group, NRA and former Moose Lodge member.

His enjoyments were watching western movies, archery, hunting and fishing, bow making, and making all kinds of knives. Frosty was known as Mr. Fixit by his family, tinkering and fixing almost anything. He was lovingly known as someone that hated to part with anything and that was most evident by the space used up in his garage.

Survivors include his wife, Fay, of the home; one son, Charles Nix of Ponca City; two brothers, George M. Nix Jr. and wife Lois, and Bill Bob Nix, all of Ponca City; one grandson, Nelson Cypret of Drumright, Oklahoma; other extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, George M. Nix III.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Woodlands Christian Church, 14th and Hartford, with Pastor Roslyn Harrison presiding. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
