Fern Jeanette Freeman, resident of Ponca City passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the Ponca City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 85. Fern was born the daughter of Walter Lee Freeman and Anna Jergens Freeman on July 6, 1923 in Rural Noble County near Red Rock. She grew up on a farm south of town receiving her education from Red Rock Schools. At the age of 17 she moved to Ponca City and got her first job driving the city bus during the war. She later was Parts Manager at Edwards Motor Company where she ran an efficient parts operation for over ten years. She was General Manager at Cowboy Supply for many years, and after it sold she went to McVeigh Outfitters. Fran ended her career working as Night Manager at the Broadway Village Housing Authority. Fern had many interests which included softball and cars but she especially loved horses. She was a member of the 101 Trail Riders and the Ponca City Riding Club. She participated in all the local rodeos and parades. Fern enjoyed horseback riding and making the grand entry at the rodeo. She was Secretary of the Oklahoma City Chapter of the Sharp Shin Society, member of Second Baptist Church and a member of the Knights of Pythias for many years. Fern is survived by her sister, Thelma Bobby Pauley of Ponca City, Oklahoma; brother, Alvin Bud Freeman and wife, Anita of Marland, Oklahoma; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Anna Freeman; brothers, Allen Freeman and Ralph Freeman; and one sister, Juanita Nix. Casket bearers for the service will be Kenneth Freeman, Dennis Nix, Jim Nix, Shawn Garvie, Brock Wilson and Dale Veit. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2008 at the First Church of God with Pastor Alan Popkin officiating. Interment will follow at IOOF Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
