Dorthie Lea (Mason)( Megee) Spears, longtime Ponca City resident passed away Thursday evening, May 11, 2017 with her loving daughter by her side. She was 95 years of age. Dorthie was born on February 4, 1922 in Ponca City, OK, to David Benjamin Mason and Artie Ann Miller Mason. Her grandparents were: Charles Louis and wife Josephine (Romine) Miller of New Mexico, and George Washington and wife Nora (Moore) Mason
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2017 in the Ponca City Assembly of God Church with Pastor Carl Neal officiating. Interment will follow in the Longwood Cemetery with Grace Memorial Chapel of Ponca City in care of the arrangements.
Dorthie grew up in Ponca City and she graduated in May of 1943. After graduation on Sept. of 1943 she moved to Washington, DC and went to work for the U.S. Navy as a Statistical Clerk, Vital Statistics and Bureau of Medicine. On December 1, 1944 her father had a farm accident and died, so she returned home to the Farm East of Ponca City. She was a gifted musician, playing the piano and singing in choirs. Dorthie met the love of her life Jessie Edgar "Catfish" Megee in Ponca City and on May 18, 1946 they were married in the Nazarene church and they made their home in Ponca City, OK. Ed preceded her in death on September 20, 1985. God placed John Spears in her life and on April 29, 1986 in the Longwood Baptist Church they were married and made Ponca City their home and he preceded her in death on March 10, 1994. Dorthie attended several churches: Longwood Baptist Church , 1st Church of the Nazarene where they were married, Osage Heights Baptist Church, Glad Tidings Assembly of God, and Ponca City Assembly of God, while attending these churches she was secretary for Osage Heights Baptist and secretary for the Women's Missionary union and Chairmen of the Missions committee. While attending Glad Tidings, she taught Sunday school and Children's Church. She also led singing and played piano and organ for Church Services. Dorthie was a 10 year member of the 4-H Club and she enjoyed travelling and she took a mission trip to Moscow delivering Bibles to school student in 1995. Dorthie also enjoyed spending time with her Senior Citizen friends and performing with them in Forever Young choir.
Her later adventures included riding a horse at 93 and a motorcycle at 94 years (she was not driving). She was privately active in political support and other non-profit contributions. The memorial fund established in her name is the Arthritis Foundation at 710 W. Wilshire Blvd., Suite F, Oklahoma City, OK 73116.
She is survived by her Son, David Megee of Fairfax, OK, 1 daughter, Laverne Megee of Grand Junction, CO, 1 daughter- in-law; Kathy (Condit) Megee of Ponca City, OK, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dorthie was preceded in death by her parents; David Benjamin and Artie Ann (Miller) Mason, 2 Husbands: Jessie Edgar "Catfish" Megee and John Spears, 1 son, Dean E. Megee, 1 brother, Wilford B. Mason and 2 sisters; Beulah Mitchell and Mildred Ross.
