Dorothy Leealma Atteberry, Ponca City resident, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2010 at the Unity Health Center in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She was 82.
Dorothy was born in Ashton, Kansas on August 11, 1928 the daughter of EdwardBabe Robinson and Etha Mae Davis Robinson. She grew up in Ashton, Kansas and attended high school in Arkansas City, Kansas. She married Harold Wayne Atteberry on May 25, 1947 in Blackwell, Oklahoma. The couple made their first home in Denver, Colorado while Harold completed pharmacy school. After graduation, they spent the next eleven years in Blackwell, Oklahoma where they started their family. They lived in various towns in Kansas until moving to Ponca City in 1964. Dorothy worked at JC Penney and retired after 30 years. She later became the crossing guard at Union School, where she earned a reputation for the costumes she wore. Dorothy also attended music classes at NOC and played the mayors wife in the musical The Music Man when she was in her late 70s. She loved playing the piano, organ and singing with the Sweet Adelines for many years. Family and music were her life.
She is survived by her children, Larry Atteberry and wife, Susan of Ponca City, Oklahoma and Sharon Jenkins and husband, Jim of Shawnee, Oklahoma grandchildren, Ryan Atteberry, Ashley Webb, Jamie Dukes and Amy Jenkins five great grandchildren, Matthew Atteberry, Reese Atteberry, Cole Webb, Britten Waters and Shelby Dukes and one sister, Edna Davis of Arkansas City, Kansas.
She is preceded in death by her parents husband, Harold in 1992 three sisters, Lucerene Cochran, Genevieve Nicholson and Darell Maltby.
Casket bearers for the service will be John Davis, Ryan Atteberry, Jeremy Webb, Dennis Dukes, Bobby Maltby and Homer Nicholson.
Honorary casket bearers will be Donald Pemberton, Brad Pemberton, Jack Pemberton and also serving will be great grandchildren, Matthew Atteberry, Reese Atteberry, Cole Webb, Britten Waters and Shelby Dukes.
The casket will be closed at the service, but family and friends may call at Grace Memorial Chapel until 1:30 p.m. Friday.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 24, 2010 at Grace Memorial Chapel with Pastor, Lisa CroneSheldon of St. Pauls United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will follow in Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the American Heart Association, Oklahoma Chapter 5700 North Portland, Suite 203, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma or to the American Cancer Society, Oklahoma Chapter P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 731231718. The family will be at Larrys home.
