Dale Flynn Battles, longtime resident of Shidler, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2009 at his home. He was 86. Dale was born September 25, 1922 in LaCrosse, Arkansas, the son of Earl Battle and Alta Flynn Battle. He attended the Melbourne, Arkansas area schools. He was married to Allene Thompson on November 24, 1942 in Dewey, Oklahoma. Dale enlisted in the United States Army on November 27th of 1942 and was assigned to Company A, 3rd Tank Battalion. He served his country during World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal and 3 Bronze Service Stars. He was honorably discharged from the Army on October 25, 1945. After the war the couple established their first home in the Wann, Oklahoma community and resided in various locations prior to moving to Shidler in 1949. Dale was employed with Gulf Oil Company for 31 years, retiring in 1985. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and his enjoyments included fishing, chipping wood and riding around in his truck. He is survived by two daughters, Vickie Moles of Shidler and Brenda Edmondson of Texas; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Allene on June 26, 1993; one brother, Glen Battles; one sister, Ann Taylor and two grandsons, Greg Thomas and Shawn Jones. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2009 at the Webb City Church of God with Pastor Charles Richey presiding. A graveside interment will follow at 2 p.m. Friday at the Dewey, Oklahoma Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. Casket bearers will be Pat Patton, Joe Thomas, Harol Snow, Dakota Thomas, Dalton Thomas and John Box. Honorary casket bearers will be Dean Crain, Sonny Holloway, Wally Hoskinson and Ken Gerboth.
