Crystal Douglas

July 10, 1961 — August 11, 2021

On August 11th, 2021 Crystal Denise Douglas passed away peacefully at Alliance Health in Ponca City, Ok.

Crystal was born on July 10th, 1961 in Altus, Ok to Jean Stephens Roberts and Lanio B. Roberts. She attended multiple grammar schools but got most of her education at Ponca City Public Schools and then graduated from Newkirk High School in 1979. She continued her education and received a Bachelors Degree in Anthropology at the University of Oklahoma and her Associated Degree in History at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Ok. She was also working toward her Masters Degree in Forensic Anthropology at Wichita State University. Before graduating, she traveled a lot with her Anthropology class to Greece, England, Italy, & Egypt where she participated in several archeological digs.

She has worked for the Kaw Nation for 25 years as their Museum Director and their Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) representative. She was a frequent supporter of the Kaw Pow Wows for many years. She even helped in the planning stages of a few. Crystal was very dedicated to the history of the Kaw Nation and the Kanza People and worked hard to teach their ancestry and traditions to those who wanted to learn. Crystal correlated classes for Native American Youth to learn about nature and some of the Kanza language.

Crystal enjoyed Swedish Weaving and spent most of her free time making blankets, hand towels, and pillows for the people she loved. Crystal was a very talented abstract artist and her art decorates many homes of her family members. She loved to experiment in the kitchen. She rarely used a recipe and most of her dished tasted delicious. There were a few that required a little more tweaking. She was an avid reader. She also liked to plan spontaneous overnight trips with her kids.

She had a very generous heart and she gave so much to the people she loved. Her laugh will always remain in the hearts of those that loved her. She is proceeded in death by her Father, Lanio Roberts, and her sister, Cindi Roberts Wathor. She is survived by her Mother, Jean Roberts, her sister, Jaquetta Bradley-Emert, and her children Mitchell Douglas, Reece Douglas, & Emily Douglas.

Her service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Newkirk, Ok on Monday August 16th, 2021 at 2 pm. A grave side service will follow at the Newkirk Cemetery.
