Clarence Edward McCurry, Ponca City resident, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at his home. He was 82.
Clarence was born on March 15, 1928 to Clarence Charles McCurry and Marjorie Faye Patterson McCurry in Byng, Oklahoma. He attended Pleasant View School, a two room school house 2 miles north of Ponca City. Clarence enlisted in the United States Army on October 1, 1946 and on December 13, 1946 he left the United States from Camp Stoneman California aboard the Costa Rica Victory on December 29, 1946 he arrived in Yokohama, Japan serving with the 21st Infantry Regiment, a unit of the 24th Infantry Division attached to the 8th Army in Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan. He was honorably discharged from military service on March 10, 1948.
Clarence returned to Ponca City where he took an interest in the FFA Future Farmers of America. He enjoyed showing hogs and raising cattle. He graduated in 1949 from Ponca City High School. On March 24, 1956, he married Myrtle Marjorie Lagel in Columbus, Kansas. Clarence attended Oklahoma AM and received a B.S. in wildlife. He was employed with Boeing, The Oklahoma Wildlife Department as a lake biologist, The Food and Drug Administration in New Orleans, Louisiana, the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Nebraska and Texas AM.
Clarence enjoyed fishing, hunting and researching family history. He loved cooking and family gatherings. He especially loved Christmas and Thanksgiving, because he had the opportunity to both cook and visit. Family and country were his top priority.
He is survived by his mother, Marjorie Faye children, Micalene Kay McCurry of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Edward Earl McCurry and wife, Julie of Ft. Worth, Texas, Stephen William McCurry and wife, Brenda of Austin, Texas, Shawn Gray McCurry and wife, Brenda of Maine,Vaughn Charles McCurry of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Barbara McCurry of Corpus Christi, Texas sister, Patricia Gates brother, Larry McCurry and wife, Paula grandchildren, Fred Marchese, Chris Marchese, Tobias McCurry, Shawn McCurry, Clarissa McCurry, Stephanie McCurry, Ryan McCurry, Jessica McCurry and Matthew McCurry great grandchildren, Caleb McCurry and Payton McCurry aunts, Bonnie Black and Lucile McLaughlin and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his father, Clarence Charles McCurry wife, Marjorie brother, Jerry Wilburn and sister, Norma Jean.
Casket bearers for the service will be Edward McCurry, Steve McCurry, Vaughn McCurry, Shawn McCurry, Tobias McCurry and Brian Gates.
Honorary bearers will be Chris Marchese and Dewey Kelly.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 22, 2010 at Community Christian Church, with Pastor Mark Lyon officiating. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
