Betty Pollard, long time resident of Ponca City died Tuesday, February 22nd in Oklahoma City. She was 92.
Betty was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Her family always came first. Bettys faith was the other cornerstone of her life. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church for over forty years where she served in many leadership capacities. She was most proud of teaching childrens Sunday School for most of those forty years.
Betty moved to Ponca City in 1961 with her husband Bill, a research chemist with Conoco. She was committed to serving the Ponca City community. This included tutoring adults in the Ponca City Literacy Program, being a long time volunteer and one time president of Meals on Wheels and being past president and board member for Church Women United. She was particularly proud of being a charter member and past president of the Child Development Center board. During her time in Ponca she worked for 14 years as a secretarybookkeeper for the Camp Fire Girls and also taught adult education classes at Ponca City High School.
She had a love of nature and was an avid birdwatcher, passionate flower gardener and an accomplished floral arranger. She also had a lifelong love of music and was a member of the Ponca City Music Club for many years.
Betty was born on November 1, 1918 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the oldest child of Dr. Roy V. and Elizabeth Barrick. She grew up in Blackwell and graduated high school there in 1936. She graduated with a degree in business education from Oklahoma AM in 1940 and then taught school in Lamont where she met her future husband. In 1942 she married Bill Pollard. When he joined the United States Navy in 1944 they spent time at several navy posts before he served overseas in the South Pacific. Together they were part of Americas Greatest Generation.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers and by her husband in 1991. She is survived by her son Ben and daughterin law Laura of Edmond, two grandchildren, Eric of Oklahoma City and Katrina of Norman, a sister Carolyn of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, two sisters inlaw, seven nephews and three nieces.
There will a visitation for family and friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Grace Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Monday, February 28 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Ponca City. Burial will follow in the Lamont Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
Casket bearers will be Eric Pollard, Katrina Pollard, Mike Barrick, Dan Barrick, John Seales and Don Reuber
