Betty Cassity of Ponca City passed away March 24, 2011 following a period of declining health. She was 89 years of age.
Betty Cassity was born July 9, 1921 on a farm in Osage County, near Ralston, where her parents, James and Olive Matthews, made their living. As a girl she moved with her family to Ponca City where she grew up.
Upon graduating from Ponca City High School in 1939 she lived downtown and worked at the Martha Ann Bakery and other stores on Grand, and then moved to Tulsa where she worked in another bakery. During World War II she married Ralph Scotty Cassity and accompanied him in his army service at Fort Leonard Wood and the Granite City Engineering Depot. During the war, their first son was born.
After the war they moved back to Ponca City, had another son, and she subsequently worked at Touraide at Conoco and at Beneficial Finance. In 1963 she received her license as a beautician and for several decades operated a beauty shop in her home. During those years she enjoyed her Northeast Baptist Church work and camping.
She had seven brothers and sisters, all of whom are deceased throughout their lives, they all remained very close. Her husband Scotty also is deceased. She leaves a loving family including her two sons, Ralph, Jr. Joe of Ponca City and Michael of Broken Arrow, his wife Connie, and their daughters Rebecca of Denver and Jessica of New York City, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at Northeast Baptist Church on Tuesday March 29 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dr. Larry Nigh officiating. Burial will take place afterwards at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
