Alvin Holmes

Alvin A.C. Calhoun Holmes Jr., resident of Ponca City, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Ponca City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 84. Alvin was born on November 16, 1923 to Alvin Calhoun Holmes Sr. and Alpha Ward Pugh Holmes in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A.C. served in the United States Army in Germany during WWII and then retired a Chief Warrant Officer from the Army Reserves after 36 years. He married Wanda Duffey on February 17, 1946 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and the couple later moved to Ponca City in 1948. A.C. was a watch repairman and worked at Sprays Jewelry Store for over 30 years. He later married Veta Mae Miner on July 2, 1982 in Ponca City, Oklahoma, where they made their home together for the past 26 years. A.C. had many enjoyments which included square dancing, reading and spending time with family and friends. He really liked boating and water skiing and was an active skier until he reached the age of 76. A.C. loved and supported the Community Concert Program as well. He is survived by his loving wife, Veta of the home; children, Donald Holmes, Ronald Holmes, Mark Holmes and Douglas Holmes; one step-son, Steven Miner; two step-daughters, Linda Hays and Rhonda Miner; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Wanda Duffey Holmes; daughter, Mary Unfried; two brothers, Paul Easton Holmes and Richard Harold Holmes and sister, Martha Jeanne Noell. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Grace Memorial Chapel with The Reverend Wilford Wisel officiating. An inurnment will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 20, 2008 at Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa Oklahoma.
